Clouds and wind on Gacka river
03. September 2020.
Yesterday was not my day. It was supposed to be sunny and with no wind. Instead, we get a windy and partially cloudy day. Clouds are not such a big deal, but I fu. king hate windy days on Gacka. I lost 3 big fish yesterday. First was on my first-morning cast on caddis nymph, the fish was pulling hard into the bottom, and eventually, she got away. It was a nice Brown and I was pretty pissed because, in a few fishing trips on Gacka before, I also lost one nice brown near that spot. After that, Filip manages to catch one really nice Rainbow. Such a beautiful fish. Sometimes, Rainbows are more tricky to catch than Browns. The reason for that is that these bows are old stocked fish, and probably caught a few times, so they are pretty clever but not uncatchable.
2. When I saw a gentle, really subtle back fin rising, I knew I was a nice fish. She was eating in the film but I decided to put pheasant tail nymph size 16 and I decided right. She grabbed the nymph so strong and quickly that there was no chance that I’d miss her. My line twiched a few centimeters and i set the hook perfectly. The fish was a monster. Big old rainbow was jumping all over the place, upstream and downstream, into the grass and out of the grass. She was really pissed and just didn't want to give up, so my nymph gave her a break and the fish unhooked in the middle of a jump. It was a nice sight and I was pretty satisfied with how I have presented the fly because currents on some parts of Gacka are complicated, and it's not so easy to present the fly the right way without the drag. Unfortunately, on Gacka there is no barbless hook rule, but my flies are all barbless because many time tippets snapps because of the grass in Gacka and some fish are really massive. So if you are not using barbless hooks, start using them. If fish break your tippet, she will lose the fly in a mater of minutes if not seconds. After that two getaways, the clouds passed us and the sun was hitting the water surface hard. Fish started to be more active in the film, and then I managed to catch 2 nice old browns on a size perdigon 22 nymph. That was a nice moment.
Vedran joined us during the most active part of the day with some presents (beer) and he sight fished for one beautiful brown. Stunning fish from Gacka was on the end of his hook after 20 minutes of changing flies. She grabbed a small 18 size black midge. The third big fish was a surprise. I just casted where every now and then I saw a nice fish, then a grab, subtle one, I set the hook and wasn't sure how big the fish was. I pulled a little bit harder to turn her head from the grass and that is the moment when I saw a massive body pulling down to the bottom. She was really, really strong and after just a few seconds my line snaps...
