Slunjčica is a small river near the city of Slunj. It flows for 4 kilometers and ends with a series of beautiful waterfalls called Rastoke, but most important, for decades, Slunjčica is a big Grayling factory. It offers different kind of fishing, similar to Chalk stream. You can fish in golf shoes if you want to, so you don’t need waders, there are just a few spots where you can wade.

Guys from the Slunj fishing club manage to get about one best kilometer of the river to place a "Catch and Release" & "Fly Fishing Only" sign. There are also taking good care of the water. In that part of the river, you can see so many Graylings that you will think someone is putting them there every night. But thats not the case. Every Grayling there is a wild fish and you can catch them from 10cm to 57cm (a record), but every year we see a nice amount of 55+ fish. Slunjčica have a lot more than this 1 kilometer, but now I will write about that river strech.

Spring 2020 was my time for Grayling fishing. The water level was lower and that's work perfectly for me because I prefer sight fishing. The first time I come to Slunjčica in 2020, my mind was blown up. I saw so many fish that I didn't know where to cast first. Enthusiasm didn't last long because after 2 hours I didn't get any fish, any bite, maybe only a few reactions. So we did a lunch break.

Slunjčica is in a canyon so the sunrise is a little bit late there. The sunrise is like the OFF and ON switch for Grayling activity on Slunjčica. The moment the sun hit the surface, insects start to hatch and fish become more active. That was it. The only thing left was to find the right fly and present it the right way.
